HYPERBOLE
Hyperbole - a type of figurative language that exaggerates something. An exaggeration is when you say that something is a lot greater than it really is.
The example is trying to say that the waves are really loud. But they could not be so loud that I could not hear myself think: that is an exaggeration. Because of the exaggeration, this example is a hyperbole.
